If you want to see more than the very centre of Florence, and don’t fancy the city’s crowded public transport, you can travel in style on City Sightseeing open-top tour buses. This is an expensive alternative, but it’s a comfortable, easy and convenient way to tour around Florence.
Why take a tour bus?
The modern double-decker buses, with an open top deck, are an entertaining way to tour the city, and should appeal particularly to families. They offer commentaries (through headphones) in several languages, including English. Travelling on the top deck you’ll enjoy good views of the town’s streets, and will get a good sense of Florence’s geography, seeing her as a coherent city rather than as the backdrop to museums. You will pay a lot more than you would for normal public transport, but you’ll be able to sit down in comfort, learn as you travel, enjoy the view, and take photographs.
Although the attractive medieval lanes in the city centre are too small to allow buses to pass down them, the buses do manage to stop close to most of Florence’s tourist attractions so passengers can hop on and off to see the sights. City Sightseeing run two routes, which visit some interesting spots outside the town centre, with superb views over Florence: San Miniato and Fiesole. One tour even passes the football stadium. Tickets are valid for 24 hours, on both routes, so you get considerable freedom to travel around.
