If you don’t already have a specific Lake Como destination in mind, I’d recommend spending a little time on research before booking your accommodation at Lake Como. Read a little about the lake and the different towns and lakes along its shores, and consider where you would like to stay and what would make the best base for you. The lake is long, and if you want to travel around seeing all the sights on the lakeshore, you should consider transport links when choosing a hotel. Como is the lake’s largest town, down at the southern end of a branch of the lake, with good connections to airports and other Italian destinations, but if you are planning a peaceful break you may prefer one of the smaller lakeshore towns or villages.

Bellagio hotels
Hotel Bellagio **
Hotel Bellagio is a surprisingly smart and contemporary two-star hotel in a great position in Bellagio, with lovely lake views from some of the bedrooms. I’ve stayed there and would recommend it as a base for exploring the lake.

Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni *****
The five-star Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is one of the traditional ‘grand hotels’ of Lake Como, and is in an enviable location on the lake shore in Bellagio. The hotel has a renowned restaurant, swimming pool and a sandy ‘beach’.

Il Perlo Panorama **
The Perlo Panorama is a popular small hotel in a quiet location with good views across the lake. It’s outside Bellagio, so is suited to drivers rather than those reliant on public transport.

Hotel Quarcino **
Hotel Quarcino is a decent budget hotel close to the lake and convenient for Como Nord Lago railway station. A practical place to stay, but do expect to be woken by church bells.

Sheraton Lake Como Hotel ****
Between Como and Cernobbio, the Sheraton (previously the Grand Hotel di Como) is a large modern four-star set in green gardens. It’s popular with international guests, though possibly not the place if you are looking for local character. The hotel has the advantage of a swimming pool and restaurant.

Menaggio
Hotel Du Lac ***
The Hotel Du Lac couldn’t be more central; it’s on the pretty main square of Menaggio, yards from the waters of Lake Como. It’s a convenient and affordable place to stay, with positive reviews from past guests. If you’re on a budget break, the hotel also operates an annexe (La Dependance) over the square which is more basic, with shared bathrooms and cheap prices.
