The Amalfi Coast is without a doubt one of the best luxury destinations in Italy. In addition to the area’s outstanding natural beauty, a history of tourism has prepared the coastline for today’s visitors. Many of the luxury hotels on the Amalfi Coast were established decades ago, and there should be little they don’t know about treating their guests well. Everyone from the jetsetter to the backpacker loves the Amalfi area, and all the four and five-star hotels boast glamorously star-studded visitors’ books. The only drawback is that some hotels are rather too traditional and perhaps put more effort into remembering their years of success than they put into providing modern, international standards of service. We include several hotels which are quite new and seem to make a real effort to attract guests, rather than just trading on their pasts.
When considering the options, you should bear in mind that the smart hotels here, while offering quite similar standards of attention and decor, are in very different locations. The views are always stunning but the hotels’ settings vary from busy village centres to lofty mountainous slopes. Although the remoter hotels generally offer shuttle services into busier destinations, the coast road can be busy (or even occasionally closed), so this won’t be the same as being able to wander out from your hotel room past boutiques and restaurants and stroll by the seashore. Conversely, if you want to relax by a pool, enjoy peace, tranquillity and views from high above the sea, you may want to avoid the hotels too near the main road and souvenir shops. Before you book, read our pages about the hotel locations, and read what past guests have to say about the general convenience, the standards of luxury and so on.
Do note that in Italy (read our article about Italian hotels) star rating doesn’t tell the whole story. Although a hotel must offer a certain level of facilities to merit five stars, you may actually find more comfort and luxury, along with friendlier service and a more exclusive atmosphere, at a smaller hotel with fewer stars. So it’s important to read what other guests have thought, and if you want a ‘special’ stay, consider researching some of the four-star options with good user ratings (online websites let you rank hotels by the opinions of past guests; an invaluable service). We’ve included some suggestions below, along with the more traditional five-star hotels. Unfortunately in this expensive part of the world you do get what you pay for, so an outstanding four-star is likely to cost nearly as much as a five-star.

Casa Angelina Hotel, Praiano
This is another fairly new five-star hotel and like the Furore Inn Resort it makes up in effort what it lacks in history. Located in Praiano, the hotel offers all the expected facilities and has very good reviews from past guests. Room types include the temptingly-described ‘Double Romantic Room with Balcony Sea View’. Check what is included when booking as breakfast may cost extra.

Hotel Parco dei Principi, Sorrento
Hotel Parco dei Principi is just outside Sorrento, on the other side of the peninsula from the Amalfi Coast, with views over the Bay of Naples. It is one of several five-star hotels in the popular resort. The smart 1960s building (a good choice for architecture buffs) has gardens and a private beach and pool. There are sometimes very good rates available online through the links below.

Less than five-star but a taste of luxury
Palazzo Murat, Positano
This is a four-star hotel in a lovely historic palazzo right in the heart of Positano, not far from the beach. The location is great for wandering around Positano, but does mean that the views are limited compared with hotels up the cliffs, and there is no pool. Rather pricey but much-loved by past guests. Good for a romantic holiday.

The four-star Miramalfi is not as luxurious as some of its brethren, but it’s a popular choice in a good location. The hotel, which is on the edge of Amalfi, has good views, terraces above the sea and an outdoors pool.
