Within an hour or two of Milan there are a wide range of excellent tourist destinations, easily accessible by car, bus or train.
Bergamo – a very attractive hill-town on the edge of the mountains. An hour by train from Milan; trains depart hourly.
Lake Como. The beautiful Lake Como is the easiest of Italy’s lakes to reach from Milan. The town of Como, at the southern end of the lake, is just 50km north of Milan and is reachable by frequent trains from Milan’s Stazione Nord and Stazione Centrale.
Lake Maggiore. The lovely resort of Stresa, on the western shore of Lake Maggiore, can be reached by trains from Stazione Centrale and Stazione Porta Garibaldi. Journey time is just over an hour.
Pavia – a historic town that once rivalled Milan. Pavia offers a number of historic sights to the visitor, including medieval towers, the Romanesque Basilica di San Michele, and (several miles north of the town) the decorative Renaissance charterhouse, the Certosa di Pavia. Pavia is half an hour by train from Milan; there are also frequent buses.
Cremona – another historic city on the Lombard Plain, to the south-east of Milan. Famous for its violin industry, Cremona is home to a Stradivarius Museum and some fine architecture. Trains and buses connect Cremona with Milan.
